Auditions

Youth Teller Auditions

Storytellers ages 5-18 are invited to audition and participate in the Festival. Selected tellers will present one 3-10 minute story on stage at the Timpanogos Storytelling Festival as featured Festival Youth Tellers.

There are two avenues for Youth Teller auditions:  School District Competitions and Open Auditions.

School District Competitions: Many Alpine District schools hold their own storytelling festivals and bring in distinguished area storytellers as judges. Two top-scoring tellers at each school are selected to compete at a district competition held in March. Inquire at your local school for more details.

Open Auditions: For those not in involved in school-related festivals, open auditions are held annually for children and teens at the Orem Public Library in early March. During open auditions, tellers present a 3 minute portion of their story.  Those invited to return for a Call-back Audition will be contacted by email and/or phone. In addition, a call-backs notification schedule will be available at open auditions. To schedule an open audition appointment, please call the Orem Public Library at 229-7436 or email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Call-back Auditions are the final auditions for youth invited to return from both open auditions and school district competitions. Youth will tell the full version of their story and will be judged on performance skills such as poise, voice expression, eye contact and body language.

Helpful Hints: Popular stories and/or fairytales told in a predictable style and manner will rarely engage the judges and audience. Beware of overly told tales; use them with caution and personal flair! Also, if using costumes or props, make sure they enhance your performance instead of distract the audience. The elegance of your story should come from your mastery and craft of storytelling rather than over-dramatization in dress, voice, or mannerisms.

Adult Storyteller Auditions

The Timpanogos Storytelling Festival invites storytellers to submit sample material for performance consideration.

Informational material is accepted throughout the year with program selections often made one to two years in advance. Please submit a photo, biography, resume, and a minimum of 45 minutes of your material (more is preferable). Recordings do NOT need to be professionally produced to be considered. Acceptable formats include audiotape, compact disc, DVD, or VHS. All submissions will be considered by the program committee. All materials submitted become the property of the Timpanogos Storytelling Festival and will be kept on file for the Selection Committee.

Individual performance time varies from two hours during the Festival weekend up to 3 hours per day. Performance time is based on committee knowledge of the teller's repertoire, performance skills for a Festival setting, program needs (including subject, story type and telling style) and the level of audience recognition of the teller.

Although we invite school groups to attend a portion of the Festival, our audience is primarily adults and families with children ages eight and up. The Festival appreciates stories that cater to a broad audience, both young and old. Performances must be free of profanity, obscenity, sexually suggestive materials, favorable references to drug or alcohol use, or other references that would be inappropriate for ages eight and up.  At times our audiences enjoy specialty programs, such as historical pieces, suited for audiences ages twelve and up. These stories provide richness and depth to the Festival program.

Please mail your audition materials to Timpanogos Storytelling Festival @ 58 N. State St. Orem, UT 84057.
